Premium 170x45 Solid Merbau Timber: Structural Strength & Natural Beauty
Wholesale Timber is the premier Merbau specialist in Queensland, supplying premium, sustainably sourced 170x45mm solid Merbau timber for high-performance outdoor construction.
Known botanically as Intsia bijuga and commonly referred to as Kwila, Merbau is a highly durable Class 1 hardwood. It is widely celebrated for its exceptional strength, natural termite resistance, and striking aesthetics. The 170x45mm profile is a heavy-duty, structural-grade timber engineered to provide maximum load-bearing capacity and a high-end finish for premium residential and commercial outdoor spaces.
Key Product Specifications
- Dimensions: 170mm width x 45mm thickness.

Primary Applications
The robust 170x45mm profile is incredibly versatile, bridging the gap between heavy structural support and premium architectural design:
- Sub-frame Construction: Ideal for heavy-duty deck joists, bearer beams, and structural sub-frames.
- Pergolas & Rafters: Provide the structural span capacity needed for open-roof pergolas, gazebos, and external roof frameworks.
- Stair Stringers & Treads: The ideal thickness and depth for building rock-solid exterior staircases.
- Architectural Screening: Used as wide-profile horizontal privacy screening or heavy vertical fencing features.
- External Furniture & Benchtop Framing: Built to withstand harsh subtropical weather conditions.
Why Choose Merbau Hardwood?
- Incredible Stability: Kiln-dried (KD) to precise moisture levels, minimising shrinkage, warping, twisting, or cupping over its lifespan.
- Natural Pest Shield: Rich in natural oils and tannins that act as a built-in defence mechanism against termites, marine borers, and fungal rot.
- Stunning Aesthetics: Features a deep, rich reddish-brown tone with signature golden-yellow mineral flecks running through the grain.
- Longevity: When properly sealed and maintained, a Merbau structure can comfortably last over 40 years above ground.
Installation & Maintenance Tips
- Pre-drilling & Fastening: Due to its high density, always pre-drill screw holes. Use high-quality Grade 304 or 316 stainless steel screws to prevent corrosion and black tannin staining.
- Managing Tannin Bleed: Merbau is rich in water-soluble tannins. Expect some "bleeding" (reddish-brown leaching) during initial rain events. It is highly recommended to use a tannin remover or to allow the timber to weather before applying a protective coat when near light-coloured concrete or porous pavers.
- Sealing: Protect your investment by applying a high-quality, oil-based timber sealer or coating immediately after installation to lock in moisture levels and protect against UV greying.
